My mom does nothing but bitch about my dad if he's brought up. Like I get that he kidnapped me and I get that he made your life a living hell, but he's worm food now! Get over it!—Sebastian Martin, to Suki Kotomari
Sebastian Martin is the Roman legacy of Mercury and Mars. He is the tritagonist of Petals On The Moon. After Suki Kotomari is sent to live with his family, Sebastian's role in her life becomes increasingly more prominent than it seems, serving an important perspective in Suki's mental state and the true nature of her life.
History[]
Birth[]
Lisa Martin, a young legionnaire, developed a Romantic relationship with another known legionnaire, resulting in an accidental pregnancy. His father, a French native, originally wanted to name the baby Bastien; Lisa refused, and compromised with the more-natural sounding Sebastian, though his father never used this name.
Sebastian grew up in New Rome and naturally learned languages faster because of his paternal ancestor, Mercury. Before he was even enrolled in school, he was a skilled trilingual and was considered an outgoing chatterbox. He had a strong love of music and socializing with others, but he often misinterpreted his own strength, resulting in several accidents. Upon being enrolled in school, Sebastian was considered a class disruption due to his social nature, but his teachers could only discipline him so far, as his grades were exemplary and even with minimal to no effort, Sebastian often learned things much faster than his peers.
Home troubles[]
Sebastian's parents split up when he was very young, resulting in some animosity. His mother was a well-respected member of the community, often working physically or with the children. She was very involved in any school events and often helped rebuild things in the community. His father, on the other hand, was in and out of town, often only returning to see Sebastian after having trouble with mortal law. Sebastian grew to have tension with his father, who was a volatile man and a poor parent that knew very little of Sebastian's life and interests.
When Sebastian was in middle school, his mother and father hit a turning point when Lisa decided she no longer wanted Sebastian's father to have visitation. In response, Sebastian's father kidnapped him and planned to journey to the Mexican border, holding Sebastian hostage for several months while evading pursuit. After his sudden death, Sebastian was returned home, but was now one year behind in school and in years of service.
Adolescence[]
Beginning in his teenage years, Sebastian developed social troubles. He was often considered annoying, brutish, and loud by most of his peers. He became known as a very poor flirt, and his interest in romance was seen as slovenly and uncomfortable. When it came to friendship, Sebastian was known for being very fun and entertaining, but nobody truly wanted to get close to him as they found him odd and offputting.
Sebastian grew to develop a form of social anxiety. While he routinely interacted with others and enjoyed himself, he often waited in fear of whether or not they would actually like him. He realized he had no close friends- even his so-called best friends- and that nobody had truly gotten to know him. He successfully hid this sadness behind a mask of humor and confidence, but felt as though he was missing out on much of the teenage experience.
When he was sixteen, his mother developed a relationship with the mortal Felix and married him. Sebastian found this offensive, as Felix had never asked for his blessing and they barely knew each other, and also found it rude that his mother never even thought to ask what he thought. Sebastian had grown used to it just being him and his mom his entire life, and he had learned never to rely on a man for anything. Therefore, with Felix in the house, now assuming a role of authority, Sebastian found it hard to adapt. He often had trouble respecting Felix and taking him seriously, saying things such as he was once the man of the house, and that Felix had not been around long enough to hold any sort of power over Sebastian.
While he did not inherently dislike Felix, he struggled with his presence entirely. In calm situations, the two got along fine, but when anything requiring parenting came up, there was often tension as Sebastian felt Felix was not worthy of being listened to. He eventually decided to be at home less and less, but only found more trouble outside with the discomfort of his peers.
Lisa one day decided to accept Suki Kotomari into her home as a foster child. Sebastian was initially wary of the idea, but grew to embrace it, deeming it might be fun. When Suki came to live with them, Sebastian initially wanted to bully her into submission to make her do things he wanted, but found that Suki was a very sweet and frightened girl. He realized she was actually a pleasant person to be around, and let his brutish facade go and elected to develop a true relationship with her, which resulting in him eventually vouching for her in front of the legion.
Personality[]
Sebastian is very energetic and enjoys having fun. He wants to be seen as the life of the party, and often uses humor to lighten the mood. He is a fairly positive person and encourages his friends in everything that they do. He is socially inept though, and struggles to form any deep connections. He is very interested in hookups and romance, and forces Reyna and Suki to be his wingmen, but he routinely fails. He often references pop culture and makes jokes about various things happening in the world. Reyna believes he knows far too much about celebrities.
Sebastian comes off as stupid and disinterested in academics, but he is one of the smartest kids in his class. He typically does not study or do homework, then crams everything in one night and manages to past. His ideas during battle are seen as ingenious and he is adaptive to almost any environment. He enjoys lively debates and typically starts arguments with everyone he knows as he finds it stimulating. He is surprisingly good at chemistry and mathematics, and is very well-versed on various sciences.
Sebastian is incredibly loyal and believes in protecting the people around him. He has a desire to be liked and revered, and he wants to be the kind of person people can depend on for emotional guidance or even physical support. He is considered fairly grounded, but has big ambitions that he is dead-set on achieving. He becomes highly agitated when someone does not believe in him, because he believes in everyone.
Sebastian often ponders his future and what he needs to do to get there, but has relatively no plan. He has a desire to have children that look up to him one day because he could never look up to his own father. He wants to be famous and liked, but for his talent rather than just his personality. He tends to struggle understanding what his emotions are like, but he tends to think very often and has very big ideas. He finds that everyone is surprised to find out he is smart, which offends him. He is also offended by people who say his personality is too much to handle, but those same people always find it irritating when Sebastian tones it down.
He is clumsy and does not understand his own strength. When he hugs people or anything physical, he often accidentally hurts them, but they do not express this because they know he is not being malicious. Sebastian often insults people when they offend him, but most of his insults are truthful to some degree.
Appearance[]
Sebastian is an athletic young man with well-defined muscles and warm brown skin. His eyes are dark, inviting, and considered warm by those who know him. He is fairly tall and has a larger upper body than lower body, adding to his great speed when it comes to running. At the start of the series, we has twisted braids, but eventually switches to short dreadlocks as he believes someone will be more interested in hooking up with him if he had a "better" hairstyle. He often dresses in jeans deemed "way too tight" and wears red converse with everything that he keeps alarming well-kept. He has a round face and is often seen smiling. His ears are pointed, and his eyebrows angle in a way that makes him look rather mischievous. His hands are considered thicker, and he keeps his nails short for guitar playing. He is considered highly coordinated despite his constant clumsiness.
Sebastian is said to look more like his mother, but he has occasionally been compared to his father, which he dislikes. His main takeaways from his father are his playful and carefree demeanor, his angled eyebrows, pointed ears, and runner's legs. He prefers telling others he looks more like his mother, who is bulkier, darker, and has rounder features overall.
