“ | If I, a 14-year-old demigod, if the ‘fading one’, why is it that a God is apparent before me, on her knees, losing her physical form? Should that not make Echidna the faded one? | ” |
—Eiko Hamasaki to the Monsters in The Loss of My Life |
Eiko-Kaori "Eiko" Hamasaki is a fifteen-year-old Japanese-born Greek demigod, the daughter of Astraea and Taro Hamasaki. She is also both a Roman and Greek Legacy of Venus, Zeus, and Hermes through her maternal ancestors, Aeneas, Helen of Sparta, and Odysseus/Telemachus. She is the only known daughter of a virgin Goddess, or a Titan in general. Formerly, she was a major supporting character within the final 3 books of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, where she was 9 years old, before being promoted to a main character in Heroes of Olympus, despite not being in the Prophecy of the Seven. She was the deuteragonist of Trials of Apollo, alongside Meg McCaffrey, being the one who inspired Apollo to save Meg from Nero. Even later in the series, when The Senior Year Adventures took place, Eiko was the central heroine/protagonist and narrator of The Daughter of Innocence. As of The Lost Hero, Piper states that she and her father, Tristan McLean, adopted the (now ‘missing’) girl.
History[]
Early Life[]
Not much is truly known about her history apart from the short, messy diary entry she wrote when she was just a mere 5 years old:
"Me were born on 18 June 1996. Wait… mama just said it was… I?? Okay… I were the fourth daughter of Taro Hamasaki and this other lady, but daddy told me to always lie, so my mother was now Hinata Hamasaki. Daddy said I weighed 3.9 kee-low gramz at birth, and Dr. Nikita used for-seps in her birth."
The next part was what she wrote at age 9
"Apparently, when I regained consciousness from the chloroform used during the "delivery", Hinata saw the "anxious and troubled faces" around her and wept: "My God, it is again a daughter. What will the grandparents say, what will the grandparents say?!" Lady Momoe Soga stated that the family were all disappointed, as they still had no son."
This part was stated by Taro during an interview to the police about his “missing child”—whom Hinata had thrown into a near-but-far field in secret to escape the embarrassment of having yet another female successor.
"My baby… my poor, little baby. Hinata swore she was playing with homes’ doorhandle before she fell asleep. I guess my little cherub Eiko-Kaori managed to get out during the time when she was asleep…"
And so, when the Goddesses Demeter and Persephone ventured out in early spring and found the young baby, they figured that Olympus would gladly greet a new “deity” with Open Arms; which they actually did, with Hera immediately wanting to care for the “pretty baby after the mistake I made with Hephaestus”.
